I Scream, You Scream

Annette, my good friend and our very own personal blog guru, came out to visit me here in very, very sunny California last week. We had a grand time hanging out, touring San Francisco, painting, talking endlessly and giggling madly. When I discovered she’d never been to a Ben & Jerry’s scoop shop *GASP!* I decided to remedy the situation immediately.

We went. We saw. We ate ice cream. (Duh, right?)

I love Ben and Jerry. I’ve never met the guys, but I can say with absolute assurance that they are two of my favorite humans – if they are, in fact, human at all. Some might argue that they’re evil diet-destroying demons. But I don’t believe in diets or in demons, and here in my happy universe, they’re revered as beneficent beings of the highest order, the divine purveyors if smooth and creamy bliss mixed with just enough crunch to keep things interesting.

Annette seems to agree with me, so it didn’t take much effort to convince her that ice cream can and should equal lunch on a hot July day in California.

One of the perks of visiting a scoop shop is access to exclusive, never found in the carton flavors. Like Coffee Coffee Buzz Buzz Buzz. Anyone who knows me would expect me to look no further on the menu.

Coffee ice cream with espresso dark chocolate chunks.

Oh, baby.

It was delicious, and totally cancelled out the need for a late afternoon latte. I think it’s wise and kind of Ben and Jerry to keep this one restricted to their shops. Otherwise, I’d have to keep some in my freezer at all times. No really. HAVE to. And if my youngest got a hold of it – in all its sugary, seriously caffeinated glory – there would be hell to pay.

Ice cream is one of the best parts of summer. Everyone should have it for lunch at least once during the season, and it should be devoured at your favorite local ice cream shop because there’s something about the atmosphere – and scent of freshly baked waffle cones – that takes the experience to a whole new level. Go on. Do it. You know you want to. And if you should require such a thing, I hereby grant you permission.

In the meantime, sound off. Ben & Jerry’s or Breyers? Godiva or gelato? Cone or cup? What’s your favorite not-so-guilty-because-I’ve-totally-given-you-permission ice cream pleasure?

  1. Remember their 70s jingle?

“There ain’t no Hagen. There ain’t no Daz.
There ain’t no Fruzen. There ain’t no Gladj.
There ain’t nobody named Steve at Steve’s.
But there’s two real guys named Ben and Jerry.”

When my wife can find it—harder and harder these days—she’s into Chubby Hubby. Which, by the way, I try not to emulate. When I’m in Kauai, I’m huge on Lappert’s Mocha Java Lava. They’re big in the Islands, but do (or did—can’t say for sure any more) have a mainland location in Sausalito, CA.

Really, though, I’m a basic boy. Gimme a large—I SAID LARGE—bowl of Breyer’s natural vanilla and I’m a happy camper.

You’ll have to excuse me now. I have to raid the freezer.

  2. Jar O' Marbles

Coffee, Coffee, Buzz Buzz Buzz was the most amazing thing EVER. Particularly when combined with a scoop of Cherry Garcia in a chocolate dipped waffle cone.

I want to go back to being on vacation lmao.

  3. Ha! Great post about something so unique to summer. You’ll find out soon enough the type of ice cream I love in my first post here, but suffice it to say – I’m a fan of it. Keep your frozen yogurt, gelato, sherbet, sorbet – Give me the real creamy fatty high calorie stuff!

Summer is way too short to skimp on ice cream!

  4. Anything. 😀

Though Late Night Snack is epic!

    • Never had Late Night Snack, so naturally I had to Google it. Fudge dipped potato chip clusters? 0_o

Dude. That’s almost as decadent as chocolate bacon brittle. Maybe even more so.

  5. See, now, this doesn’t work for me. I like ice cream, emphasis on the like, but I LOVE potato chips or anything salty. I like chocolate, but love popcorn. But I have to say I absolutely LOVE the names and would be tempted just because of them.

  6. I was just in Portland and we found a shop that sells frozen yogurt you “decorate” yourself. I had 2 kinds of chocolate yogurt, and 1 called “cake batter” and then added brownie, choc. chips, nuts, mint candy and hot fudge. OMG! My husband called it a chocolate rush. I’m glad they don’t have one of those near me, so I understand the coffee ice cream issue. Too good.
